Three more East Croydon buildings have been locally listed #croydon

Three buildings close to the ECCO area have been added to the Local List of Buildings.

  • Athene House, 13 Addiscombe Grove (above), a late Victorian building formerly occupied by the Croydon International Language Club
  • Alico House, 20-24 Addiscombe Road (below), currently occupied by the Easy Hotel. Built in 1963, it has been described as of “wonderful interlocking pre-cast concrete panels… this building appears to be made entirely of arrows and fast-forward chevrons.  The facia folds inwards and outwards, creating a superb sense of motion in a static building” (Wandle Park Heritage Project. 2015. Modernist Croydon Architecture Walk. Croydon)
  • Above ground elements of the pedestrian subway, signage and tiling (below), outside of One Croydon (formerly the NLA Tower), 12- 16 Addiscombe Road,

Locally listed buildings do not require listed building consent for development work, but the council will take the building’s historic and architectural character into account in planning application decisions https://www.croydon.gov.uk/planning-and-regeneration/planning-policy/conservation-and-heritage/locally-listed-buildings.

Locally listed buildings within the ECCO area include

  • Oval School
  • The Oval Tavern

  • 162-168 Cherry Orchard Road
  • Georgian Court, Cross Road,
  • 86 & 88 Lower Addiscombe Road
  • The Church of the Nazarene, 55 Lower Addiscombe Road

The Leslie Arms is the only nationally listed building within the ECCO area. Davidson House (Freemason Road) and St Mary Magdalene Church (Canning Road) lie just outside.
