Martin Eales will explore the early ideas and evidence for the concepts of continental drift leading to the paradigm of plate tectonics. Early cartographers recognised that the continents across the Atlantic appeared to fit like a jigsaw puzzle. However, there was no explanation for this and generally the idea that continents could move around the earth was dismissed as bizarre by scientists until the middle of the 20th century.
