Have your say about the regeneration of the Leslie Arms Junction @yourcroydon @TfL @Addiscombe_West

The Leslie Arms Junction (where Lower Addiscombe Road meets Cherry Orchard Road & Morland Road) is in desperate need of some TLC!

Some initial ideas have been put together to make the junction more user friendly and safer for everyone who uses it whether on foot, bus, cycle or car.  These changes would keep the flow of traffic through this important gateway to Croydon, but also

  • incorporate wider pavements
  • add dedicated cycle paths
  • improve the shop fronts
  • install more trees and plants

If you would like to comment on these suggestions, add your own ideas or discuss them with an informal group of interested residents, please e-mail mail@eastcroydon.org.uk using the title “LAJAR”.

Here are some initial design thoughts which have been produced as a possible vision of how the junction could be developed.

Above is a vision of a possible revision of the junction layout. The Red parts on the drawing identify areas of space currently taken up by road that could be reclaimed for urban realm with trees, grass, bike parking, cycle paths, kiosks and seating etc. This is “blue-sky-thinking” plan removes the roundabout, but this is not a given and would not necessarily be possible. It is aimed at generating ideas.

Above shows the number of trees and the amount of vegetation that could be incorporated and other possible uses for the urban realm that could be taken back from the roads. Better placed zebra crossings would make visiting all of the sides of the junction far easier and safer which would encourage people to use junction more frequently and in turn attract new businesses. Again – this is just an idea aimed at generating ideas.

  1. Perhaps getting the owner of the Leslie Arms to finish the renovations and get the unsightly, delapidted hoardings and scaffolding removed would be first move…….

  2. ECCO have recently contacted Croydon Council to see what is happening about the hoardings. The owner of the Leslie Arms received a conditional agreement for planning permission some time ago, but it is not clear whether those conditions have been met. Can you email address be forwarded to the group of local people coming together to seek improvements to the Leslie Arms Junction?

  3. While the Leslie Arms Building is central to this busy shopping junction we can’t wait for that to be resolved before the general area goes under some sort of rejuvenation. We could be waiting a long time… We need improvements sooner. Wider pavements for pedestrians and our kids to walk on, safer routes for cyclists and a more pleasant junction that we can use without feeling at risk after dark. Ideally laid out in a way that doesn’t encourage accidents. Some trees and a better ambience might hopefully attract some new shops which would encourage local use.
    Thanks for your input!

  4. Just a couple of thoughts. I would certainly welcome more conveniently placed road crossings. My main concern is that there are buses that use the roundabout to make turns that would seem to be difficult without it. It would be a serious inconvenience if those buses had to be re-routed.

    • Mike – the bus routes are central to all of this as is keeping an effective flow of trafffic.
There is an opportunity of shortening the bus journey by enabling them to turn left out of Cherry Orchard Road onto Lower Addiscombe Road which would mean buses wouldn’t need to go the extra distance around the roundabout. It needs a proper study to prove it possible obviously, but if it is possible then a lot of traffic would be eased by not having to go the extra distance and the flow could be substantially improved.
If the roundabout does need to stay there is a lot that can still be done in terms of widening pavements, moving crossings and creating a pleasant atmosphere.
      Thanks again for your feedback.
