Traffic Chaos in East Croydon

thumb_DSC01608_1024

Part of Addiscombe Road has been closed until 16 August for maintenance of the tram tracks.

The current diversion signs send all north-bound traffic from Park Hill Road to Cedar Road via Brickwood Road. The road layout then leads it south up Lebanon, back down Chisholm and onto Cedar again. Hence the unusually high volumes of traffic on Cedar as traffic is forced to retrace its route back to Addiscombe Road/Park Hill Road via either Blake Road or Colson Road.

This morning there was a car accident on Blake Road, leaving Colson Rd the only option for drivers wanting to leave Cedar Road. Numerous cars have been observed driving around in circles looking for a way out, some of them driving at high speed or going the wrong way down one-way streets in frustration!

East Croydon Community Organisation have asked Croydon Council to improve the temporary signage and have been backed up by their ward councillors. This morning, some of the signs have been changed and we wait to see if this will prove effective.

  1. I have stood at junction with Cedar Rd since 08:30. Lots of people lost. I notice as soon as I left junction cars driving wrong way down Lebanon Rd increased.
I have concerns that once rush hour starts at 16:00, there will be absolute chaos again as few drivers seem to be looking at any of the road signage and they still driving too fast.

  2. One driver who was collecting his elderly father asked if anyone had received any notices from TramLink. He stated his father hadn’t. He stated that in West Croydon when works were carried out on the tram lines TfL TramLink put newsletters & notices through every persons door. It really begs the question what has happened this time?

  3. IMPORTANT UPDATE:
Due to the very high volume of traffic circling the area trying to find a way out; some very dangerous driving; and the need to accelerate the Tramlink works, access to the East Croydon streets has become more limited as streets are closed. The easiest route IN is via Lebanon Rd from Leslie Park Road. The ONLY EXIT is via Blake road.

BE VERY CAREFUL OF NORTH-BOUND TRAFFIC DRIVING AT HIGH SPEED THROUGH THE NO-ENTRY SIGNS ON LEBANON ROAD. IT IS MOVING MUCH FASTER THAN OTHER TRAFFIC AND WITH LITTLE REGARD FOR PEOPLE, OTHER DRIVERS AND PARKED CARS.
