Major improvement works are to start this month to transform the area around East Croydon station, as part of the overall regeneration of the town centre.
The area surrounding the station and from George Street to Wellesley Road will be overhauled to make it more attractive and accessible. There will be improved pedestrian access to the station, while George Street will be completely revamped with new paving and an improved street area. Crossings will also be made simpler and easier to navigate at the junction with Wellesley Road. Works are due to start on Monday, 19 January and are expected to last until December.
In the second phase of the works, which will take place later in the year, there will be a newly created pedestrianised space to the east of the station on Billinton Hill. Connections from train to bus and tram will be significantly improved, with better links between eastbound and westbound bus stops. In addition there will be an improved taxi rank and public ‘drop off’ and ‘pick-up’ points at the station. Users of East Croydon station are warned of possible disruption at busy times throughout the duration of the works.
An open event will take place on the station forecourt between 4pm and 8pm on Monday, 12 January, to inform people about the works.
