Ongoing Battle Against Incinerator – Latest

The campaign, and its community supporters, opposing the construction of a refuse incinerator by Viridor just over the borough boundary with LB Sutton has put out the following appeal for financial support to keep going, which I have copied below. There are issues about its location as the prevailing wind will ensure that virtually none of the pollution will fall in LB Sutton and the majority will track across North & Central Croydon, Lambeth and Southwark. The nature of the incinerator seems at odds with LB Sutton’s supposed “green credentials”.

Dear All,

As I am sure you have seen on Inside Croydon ( ) the incinerator case was thrown out by the High Court. This means that Shasha is now personally liable for £5,000 costs. We really must clear this together as he has stood up to represent us all.

If he is to appeal the case then he needs to secure a further £1,500 to mount an appeal plus £2,500 for a protective costs order. You may wish to support him further to go on in the hope that:

  1. A higher court see sense and will listen and understand the arguments;
  2. The building of the facility is stalled long enough for the EU to intervene and restrict the building of such facilities on health grounds which seems highly likely in the near future.

Please think carefully about your commitment to Croydon’s air quality & health; and to a good man who is no richer or braver than the rest of us, but feels strongly that this is the right thing to do.

Please forward this e-mail on to your friends and contacts.
