“Woodside Brickworks” talk by Edward Handley 2.30pm Saturday, 3 January at East Croydon United Reformed Church, Addiscombe Grove #croydon

The rich and accessible deposit of London clay, particularly in the north of the borough, gave rise to Croydon’s earliest heavy industry – brickmaking. Numerous brickworks were established early in the nineteenth century providing the essential fabric for constructing the suburbs. The largest of these, indeed the biggest in southern England, was the Handley Brickworks at Woodside. Edward Handley in conversation with John Hickman talks about his family’s brick manufacturing business where production reached an output of up to a million bricks a week.
