Every summer, East Croydon Community Organisation audits the street trees in our area. This year we counted 358 street trees, of which 57 trees were on private land. The latter were mostly adjacent to developments such as the Menta apartment blocks on Cherry Orchard Road and Mosaic East on Addiscombe Road & Cherry Orchard Road. The 301 public trees have been planted and are tended by Croydon Council.
There are about 34 species of trees on our streets, the most common being
- Cherry 131
- Pear 51
- Maple 20
- London Plane 12
- Lime 10
- Whitebeam 10
- Birch 10
- Plum 10
- Rowan 10
- Elm 8
- Oak 8
- Cherry Plum 7
- Sycamore 5
- Crab apple 6
- Beech 5
- Horse chestnut 5
However, we also have about 65 empty tree pits (seven more than last year). Croydon Council no longer replaces those that have died, though residents can also arrange for trees to be planted through https://www.treesforstreets.org.
Unfortunately, several of the trees planted near the Blossoms & Mosaic East blocks have also died and it remains to be seen if they will be replaced. The magnificent oak on Addiscombe Road (pictured above) stands opposite a development called The Oaks – here all the trees planted in front of the entrance are lifeless.
