This talk, by Dr Ian Goodall, describes the history of microscopy and how the two types of electron microscope work. It shows how the structure of the various mini organs (organelles) has been revealed by the electron microscope and how the DNA in the nucleus works with an organelle called the ribosome to synthesise proteins. Learn how the ultrastructure of muscle cells enable them to contract, and how the tiny hairs called cilia work to keep our lungs free of dust and pathogens. Find out about the incredible molecular turbines that operate inside mitochondria to generate energy for living processes.
