Mosaic East is the new name for Stephenson and Knolly’s House at the corner of Cherry Orchard Road and Addiscombe Road. It was built in the mid-1960s and featured the extensive use of micro-mosaics on its facade, as did the GPO sorting office immediately to its west (since demolished). Unfortunately, the adhesive used to attached the micro-mosaics proved ineffective and some of the surfaces were later clad in steel to prevent the tiles from falling on the pavement below. As part of the current refurbishment, even more of the micro-mosaics are being covered up. No doubt the building has been renamed in their memory.

Knolly’s House is in the top right of the photograph, with Stephenson House branching off behind it. In the centre, the foundations of the NLA Tower (now One Croydon) are being dug.
