Every summer, East Croydon Community Organisation audits the street trees in our area.
This year we counted 364 street trees, of which 55 trees were on private land. The latter were mostly adjacent to developments such as the Menta apartment blocks on Cherry Orchard Road and Knolly’s House (currently being renovated as Mosaic East) on Addiscombe Road. The 309 public trees have been planted and are tended by Croydon Council.
There are about 36 species of trees on our streets, the most common being
- Cherry 131
- Pear 50
- Maple 20
- London Plane 13
- Lime 12
- Whitebeam 11 (including the tree above, on Cedar Road)
- Birch 11
- Plum 11
- Rowan 10
However, we also have about 58 empty tree pits. Every year we ask Croydon Council if some of these can be filled, some years with more success than others. Residents can also arrange for trees to be planted plant through https://www.treesforstreets.org
Street trees are important for many reason, including providing shade in hot weather. The map below is centred on Lebanon Road. The areas around Lower Addiscombe Road, Leslie Grove and Leslie Park Road are at the highest risk of experiencing extreme temperatures in hot weather.
