Croydon Sings 3pm, Saturday 1 July @croydonminster

The concert will begin with a semi-staged performance of Benjamin Britten’s The Golden Vanity, sung by the choristers of Whitgift School. A vaudeville on an old English ballad , the work’s chorus of trebles tells the story of a sea battle with Turkish pirates, the humble cabin-boy who saves the day, and a treacherous sea-captain who refuses to keep a promise.

Over the year members of the Minster music department have working with local schools. They will be joining the Minster choristers for a performance of  Captain Noah and His Floating Zoo by Michael Flanders (of Flanders and Swann) and Joseph Horovitz. Accompanied by a Latin-American samba rhythm, Noah and his family load the ark with one pair of every animal imaginable. Aboard the ark, forty days and forty nights of ceaseless rain takes its toll, but the mood changes both dramatically and musically when the rain finally stops and the world dries out.
