Every year the Royal Society for the Protection for Birds asks people to count the birds they see in their garden for one hour. This tells them how well or badly the different types of birds are doing nationwide.
Last year in a small East Croydon garden there were 10 sparrows, 7 pigeons, 2 blue tits, 2 blackbirds, 2 robins, 2 wood pigeons, a magpie and a crow. In the past, other birds have included starlings, pied wagtails, wrens, blue jays and even a woodpecker.
